Cellphone robbery suspect sentenced

A man (28) was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for armed robbery in the Boksburg Magistrate's Court on October 31.

According to Sgt Cebisa Maseko of the Boksburg SAPS, the case was opened on June 7. The victims were sitting at the train station when they were approached by two armed suspects, one with a firearm and one with a knife.

According to Maseko, they robbed the victims of their cellphones. One of the victims chased the suspects and with the help of passers-by was able to apprehend one of them.

“The cellphone was found in the possession of the apprehended suspect and was returned to the victim.”

She said the case came before the magistrate 14 times before the final sentencing.

“The station management applauds Sgt Simphiwe Gumede for the achievement of this sentence. He worked hard to ensure the suspect was put where he belongs.

“This sentence sends a strong message to the community at large that crime doesn’t pay and at the end justice prevails.”
