Making your own ‘reverse’ advent calendar can help a needy child

Childline Gauteng has has a novel way of making a difference this festive season - make your own "reverse" advent calendar.

Dumisile Nala, CEO of Childline South Africa, has fond memories of the joy an advent calendar brought to her as a child.

“Each day from December 1 until Christmas Eve, I would open a little window on a box type calendar, and find a treasure. My treasure, of course, is chocolates.

“But have your considered that instead of finding a treasure for yourself, you place a ‘treasure’ inside a box for those less fortunate,” Nala said.

“Each day, in the days leading up to Christmas, you place items inside the box. By Christmas Day you will have a box full of everyday treasures to donate to Childline Gauteng – treasures that we may take for granted, but that the families and children Childline cares for will be very grateful for.”

Here are some ideas of the little “treasures” that will make a big difference:

  • Various back to school items (stationery, books, geometry sets, oil pastels, water paints, play dough, poster paint).
  • Toiletries (soap, shampoo, toilet paper, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant).
  • Non-perishable food stuff (mealie meal, tinned food, tea, sweets, juice concentrates).
  • Any other goodies that you feel would benefit or spoil the children Childline helps on a daily basis.
  •  Alternatively, you can make a monetary donation to Childline:

Bank: First National Bank; Branch: Parktown; Branch Code: 250455; Account Number: 503 900 338 23; Reference: Advent2017. Send your proof of deposit to jolened@childline.org.za
