Great support for welfare foster homes on Bumbanani Day

Foster children in the care of Boksburg Child Welfare experienced a super treat on October 14, thanks to the annual Afrox Bumbanani Day.

Representatives from Afrox’s SHEQ (safety, health, environmental and quality) department took nine children and the two house mothers to Carnival City to enjoy a movie while other employees and welfare representatives rolled their sleeves up at the welfare’s Thokomala houses, in Vosloorus and Villa Liza, to install a new stove and washing machine and to set up a new computer and printer in each.

The homes were also donated crockery and other small much-needed items. Representatives at the Villa Liza home also braaiied hamburger patties and made sure each child had a yummy meal waiting when they returned from their movie outing. The children and house mothers also received hampers.

Vanessa Naidoo-Pillay, assistant director of Boksburg Child Welfare, said Afrox has sponsored the Bumbanani Day for about five years and it is always a highlight for the children and the organisation.

Afrox’s head of communications for Africa, Johann Cilliers, explained their involvement with Boksburg Child Welfare is part of 45 projects the company supports on its annual Bumbanani Day.

“Bumbanani means ‘come together’ in Zulu.

“This initiative not only serves to make a social impact but also gives meaning to our employees and suppliers who are invited to drive the projects and roll them out in the various communities,” Cilliers said.

“What is important for us too, is sustainability and good governance of these projects.”

He added that Afrox also supports Boksburg Child Welfare’s foster homes in other ways throughout the year.

“If there is a need, we try to address it, whether it involves upgrading play equipment, providing clothing or doing some gardening.”
