Full programme of fun at Strelitzia Service Centre for the elderly
Strelitzia Service Centre was abuzz with activity from September 26 to September 29 as the elderly gathered to enjoy various special activities as part of an early celebration to mark Older Persons Week (September 30 to October 6).
Crafts, recipes, laughter and companionship are the order of the day at the "Kuierhoekie". This intrepid group donate the knitwear they create to charity projects and welcome donations of wool. The group is open to anyone who enjoys good company with like-minded crafters and meets at Strelitizia Service Centre every Tuesday from 9.30am to 12.30pm. They usually close their gathering off with a delicious three-course meal at the service centre, which costs only R30 for members. Back (from left): M
The programme included a knitting and needlework corner, carpet bowls, line dancing, a visit by Sassa members, bingo, a talent show and, of course, delicious meals for those members who booked.

Sister Dana Jonck (right) enjoyed the bustling atmosphere at Strelitzia during their Week of the Aged programme. She visits the service centre on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8.30am to 11.30am, to see elderly patients. A doctor is also available every Friday between 9am and 10am. Appointments to see the doctor can be made through Sister Jonck. With her is centre manager Rika Crous.
Carpet bowls is for everyone! So said captain of the Strelitzia Service Centre’s team Neels Jonck (left), who has been playing carpet bowls at the centre for about 16 years. “We have about 21 members, including a person in a wheelchair, at the moment and regularly host and take part in competitions.” To join the team, you must be a member of Strelitzia (R75 membership per year).
