Reiger Park taxi boss Foster gunned down in Katlehong

Reiger Park Taxi Association chairperson Talby Foster has been killed.

While details remain sketchy, the Advertiser received confirmation of Foster’s death from the association’s Mike Sultan.

According to Sultan, Foster was gunned down during the early hours of September 3.

Sultan, however, said the association would only give a full statement later on.

The motive for the killing remains unclear.

Thokoza SAPS spokesperson Capt Lesetja Mathobela confirmed that Foster was shot in Motloung Section, Katlehong, as he was leaving a shisa nyama (local eatery).

Mathobela said detailed information regarding the circumstances surrounding Foster’s death would be released once he has compiled a full report.

Ward 34 Clr Charlie Crawford said he was deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the death of one of their community leaders.

“I don’t know how he was killed, but we are hoping to get more insight into the incident. We are still waiting to hear from the police. It’s sad to lose another chairperson of our taxi association like this.”

The Reiger Park taxi industry has been marred by violence in recent years.

In May 2014, Reiger Park Taxi Association chairperson Andy Khoza was gunned down in what appeared to be taxi-related violence. Khoza was travelling with two of his grandchildren when gunmen shot and killed him. It is believed the killing was related to the fight over routes.

It was suspected that the violence at the time was spawned by the Reiger Park and Vosloorus taxi associations’ feud over the Holomisa to Boksburg taxi route.

The Reiger Park Association was granted rights to the taxi route in a ruling by the Johannesburg High Court. The Vosloorus Association later challenged this ruling.

Foster’s memorial service will be held at the Reiger Park Civic Centre at 11am on September 7. -@FanieFLK
