Angelo patrollers discover illegal firearms, apprehend gunmen

Members of the Angelo community patrollers discovered two unlicensed firearms in the informal settlement and apprehended two gunmen aged 22 and 31 on the morning of August 3.

Reacting to the rash of crimes by gunmen who ambush residents while on their way to work during the early hours, members of the patrollers conducted a patrol of the neighbourhood during the early hours of Thursday.

While patrolling the area, they spotted two suspicious men walking on the path, and they asked for permission to search them. It was thereupon found that the two men were each carrying an unlicensed firearm.

The police were immediately called and the pair was arrested.

Seen with the suspects are some of the patrollers who busted the gunmen.

The men were both charged with possession of unlicensed firearms.

The recovered firearms had empty magazines and their serial numbers were filed off. They will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were used in any other crimes.

The suspects will soon appear in the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court facing their charges.

The Boksburg SAPS management saluted the patrollers for the discovery, saying it is a step in the right direction in removing the deadly weapons from the community besieged by armed suspects, who have been for years eluding the police.

A local business, Leloba Bright Trading, recently equipped the patrollers in question with six new bicycles to use when patrolling the area.

The area has recently seen an increase in gun related crimes, whereby people are robbed and killed or injured. @FanieFLK
