‘Death-trap’ in Atlasville finally covered

An open manhole in the Atlasville Park, on the corner of Cockatoo and Goudsnip streets, has finally been covered.

Action taken by the metro follows reports – by a resident and the ward councillor for the area, Andre du Plessis -being sent to the Ekurhuleni metro on several occasions.

According to the resident, Andries Venter, the manhole remained uncovered for about six months.

He reported it to the metro in April and followed up on this query numerous times.

An open manhole in the Atlasville Park, described as a ‘death-trap’.

“The manhole is about four metres deep and you could only see it once you were several metres from it,” Venter said.

“It posed a great danger to pedestrians and animals, especially at night – it’s was a death-trap.”

According to du Plessis, he too reported the matter multiple times to heads of departments.

“No one wanted to take accountability for it,” he said.

The Advertiser contacted the metro and is awaiting a response.
