The incident happened around 5am, minutes after the shop owner opened his business.
According to Constable Nkemeleng Mabula, from the Dawn Park police station, while the shop owner was inside the shop he was approached by two men, who gained access by breaking the security gate.
The suspects held the shop owner up, dragged him along the floor and kicked him while demanding money.
“They stole an undisclosed amount of money, cigarettes and airtime worth R1 000 before fleeing in separate cars, a white Avanza and a red VW Polo,” Mabula said.
Community members alerted security guards about the robbery.
“Minutes later an accident occurred not far from the shop and the shop owner rushed to the scene. He realised that the suspect in the Avanza was involved in the accident,” she said.
The Dawn Park SAPS were called to the scene, where they arrested and charged the suspect with business robbery and reckless and negligent driving.
The suspect who was charged will appear in court soon. The other suspect is still at large.
