Job scammers target advertisers of the classifieds section
Job seekers who advertised in the Advertiser's classifieds section recently became the victims of a cruel crime.
According to the complainant, speaking on behalf of two victims and who wishes to remain anonymous, someone contacted the victims about a vacancy at Tambo Memorial Hospital, after seeing their adverts in the newspaper.
“They were told to pay R550 into a bank account at Checkers before 9am the following day. This amount, the person said, was for a uniform and shoes,” said the complainant.
“She was then told to report to the hospital at 11am.”
However, upon their arrival at the hospital they discovered there was no job and that they had been scammed.
“The money was withdrawn minutes after it was deposited,” said the complainant.
“When the victims contacted the number from which they’d received the calls, there was no answer.”
The friend of the complainant’s domestic worker fell victim to this crime and told the complainant she was contacted twice by the same scammers.
“The second time they contacted her she confronted them and they hung up the phone,” said the complainant.
The victim is also aware of another woman who was scammed in the same way.
Boksburg North SAPS communications officer Capt Juanita Coetzer advised that proper enquiry must be made before a job offer is accepted.
“No work-related offer will be made telephonically. Applicants will be invited for an interview,” she said.
