She believes the rocks were deliberately placed there.
Lynne Serfontein said motorists must be vigilant as troublemakers seem to be placing rocks on the freeway.
When motorists hit these rocks they’re either forced to stop or slow down, as she did.
The rocks are the size of an adult’s palm and the same colour as the road, Serfontein reported.
She was on her way home from work in Bedfordview at about 10pm when she hit the rocks, which damaged both her vehicle’s left tyres.
She was forced to come to a standstill before the Barbara Road bridge.
On this particular night, Serfontein said, about five other vehicles were damaged after hitting the rocks.
She said there were about 10 rocks placed in random locations along the road.
“When the vehicle in front of me hit the rocks, they scattered and I couldn’t swerve out or stop in time,” she explained.
Serfontein had to wait for an hour and a half on the side of the highway for a tow truck to remove her vehicle from the scene.
“My insurance company wanted to write off my vehicle due to the severe damage, but panel beaters managed to fix it,” she said.
Boksburg North SAPS communications officer Capt Juanita Coetzer warns motorists to be vigilant at all times, especially at night.
“Drive at a speed that will allow you to slow down quickly enough should you notice something suspicious in the road. We urge motorists to be extremely vigilant as this placing of rocks on the highway appears to be a new trend.”
