Juvenile inmates learn about the importance of second chances

Juvenile inmates recently gathered at the recreation hall at Boksburg Correctional Services for a youth dialogue programme hosted by the Ekurhuleni Office of the Speaker.

With the aim to instil behavioural change, the programme provided much-needed engagement on issues such as substance and sexual abuse, the relevance of education and how the young inmates can contribute positively to their respective communities if given a second chance.

The Speaker of Council, Alderman Patricia Khumalo, outlined the purpose of the event, briefly touching on how communities can lend their support in the process of reintegrating offenders into society.

Khumalo said when inmates are in prison it doesn’t mean the public has forgotten about them.

Other speakers included Vincent Manetsa, a reformed offender who fiercely fights the stigma within communities and now runs a successful business.

He wants to do more for inmates so they can find their feet once afforded a second chance in the community.

Nontsha Nciza, a human rights activist, spoke extensively about the negative effects of sexual violence and substance abuse in society.

One of the other speakers, Solly Mankga, took the opportunity while imprisoned to advance his education and now hosts a show aimed at motivating inmates and former offenders on Tobela FM.

Lastly, Themba Lukhele, previously known as Skeem-GP, found that, while serving his sentence, being spiritually rooted helped him gather the strength and motivation to work more boldly on changing his life and he is now an inspiration to others.

Lukhele is in the process of launching a NGO that will assist former offenders.

The juveniles offered their talents through performances, such as Isicathamiya, isiPantsula and various musical performances.

Challenging the status quo and having the will to succeed, despite the stigma, was a message that resonated with the juveniles.

Khumalo was awarded a token of appreciation for her dedication and willingness to drive this initiative.

It is through such programmes that the Office of the Speaker seeks to advance social reform and creating broadminded and engaged communities.
