Man fakes hijacking in rented car

A 48-year-old man has been arrested for perjury after allegedly lying that he was hijacked while driving along R554 Road, on December 25.

The man alleges that at around midday he was forced to stop by men in two vehicles.

According to Const Nkemeleng Mabula from the Dawn Park SAPS, the man said six men came out of the vehicles and two of them pointed firearms at him.

“He said they then drove with him along Nigel Road and dropped him next to Mapleton where he walked to the Dawn Park SAPS to open a case of hijacking,” Mabula said.

On that same day, the case was assigned to Detective W/O Ben Selekane who made a shocking discovery.

Through the investigation, it was discovered that the car the 48-year-old was driving belonged to a certain rental company.

It was also revealed that the car was supposed to be returned, on December 25.

“Through the investigation it was discovered that the car which was said to have been hijacked was parked inside the garage at the 48-year-old’s home in Vosloorus, on January 3.

“The detective linked all the information and it was revealed that the man had reported a false case,” Mabula said.

The suspect appeared before the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court, on January 4 where he was granted bail.

The case was postponed and he will appear again in court, on January 21.

The Dawn Park SAPS warns the public against reporting false cases as perjury is a serious crime and the consequences can be severe.
