Christmas party puts a smile on children’s faces
For the fourth time round, the Elsburg Support Group hosted a Christmas party for mentally challenged children at the Bokkie Park on December 9.
Checkers Hyper sponsored the Christmas party with food, snacks and cakes.
Meanwhile, the Ekurhuleni municipality provided transport and Dawod and Son’s as well as the Elsburg business people assisted with catering.
Florence Matona, chairperson of the Elsburg Support Group, said: “We decided to bring these children to the Bokkie Park so that they can learn about the different types of animals. This helps to stimulate their minds. Mentally challenged children are always kept indoors to protect them from the world. The chances for them to go out are very slim, so we are trying to get them out of their comfort zone so they can explore things,” Matona said.
Matona said at the Elsburg Support Group they also teach parents of mentally disabled children skills such as dressmaking, knitting and woodwork. The Elsburg Support Group is trying to help these parents generate an income to support their families. “Our only challenge now is getting a venue where we can run the projects from, in order to change lives.”
Sufura Sheriff, public relations manager at Checkers and Checkers Hyper, said they always support the Elsburg Support Group Christmas parties because they have seen the wonderful effect they have.
