Tragedy of brain damaged father, deaf son
The Advertiser published a plea penned by local deaf boy Dylan Scholtz (7), on behalf of his family, in August.
Earlier this year, his father Leon Scholtz was brutally assaulted at a nightclub.
He’s now suffering traumatic brain injury; in simple terms, severe brain damage.
The injuries resulted in his father not being able to take care of the family anymore – and Dylan sought help from the community.
He now appreciates the response received.
“On behalf of my family, I would like to thank everybody in the community who read and responded to my article.

“We appreciate all your assistance and contributions,” wrote Dylan.
Leon is able to walk, but is still unable to talk and perform everyday things like dressing and feeding himself.
Progress is very slow, but the family remain positive and hopeful.
“Unfortunately we won’t be spending Christmas together this year, as Dad and our sister Abigail (4) will be accompanying Oupa and Ouma Scholtz to East London, to visit family for the holidays. This saddens me.”
The family still welcomes help from community members and if you would like to make a donation for Christmas, you may contact Ouma Evie Scholtz on 011 922 1364, or Dylan’s mother Charlene on 079 567 5101 or 011 039 1933.
No arrests have been made in connection with his attack.
