Announcing the news to the media this morning (November 23), Ekurhuleni Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina revealed that ‘in the letter Mahlabe cited that he wishes to pursue business interests’.

“Although this development was unexpected, after carefully considering the matter and consultation with relevant stakeholders, I have accepted the resignation of the Chief of Police because it is my view that you must always avoid standing in someone’s way if they wish to pursue other ambitions.

“Mahlabe’s ‘Bumper to Bumper’ approach had an immediate impact in the fight against crime. As a City we commit to continue building on the foundation that Mahlabe and his predecessors have left over the years,” the mayor said.

Masina announced that the City had appointed the deputy Chief of Police in charge of logistics General Isaac Mapiyeye, who has 31 years’ experience in policing, as the acting Chief of Police with effect from December 1 until the position is filled within the next three months as prescribed by Legislation.

Masina thanked Mahlabe for his commitment and unwavering dedication to fight crime in the region.

“I also, on behalf of the City of Ekurhuleni, wish Mahlabe all the best in his future endeavors.”

Despite the latest developments, Masina issued a stern warning to criminals emphasizing that Mahlabe’s departure will not affect the work of the EMPD in fighting lawlessness in the region.

“Our vigilance will become even more visible during this festive season. Our approach continues to be a ‘Zero Tolerance’ to crime. If you are thug, commit crime at your own peril because we shall take no prisoners,” concluded Masina.
