Suspect appears in court over Maskandi shooting

One of the men accused of killing three members of a Maskandi music group, in Mapleton, appeared in court on September 26.

The three deceased belonged to a group called Abafana Bakamolo, a five-member band founded by Maskandi legend Bhekumuzi Luthuli, in 2006.

They were allegedly killed because they sang a Maskandi sound that was created by the late Luthuli, which their killers believed was Maskandi reserved only for singers from KwaZulu-Natal.

They were stabbed to death in July and the perpetrators drove away from the scene.

A case of murder was registered at the Dawn Park Police Station following the incident.

According to Dawn Park SAPS spokesperson Const Nkemeleng Mabula, investigations led the detectives to KwaZulu-Natal,where a 25-year-old suspect was arrested.

He appeared in the Palmridge Magistrates Court on September 26, to face three counts of murder.

The case has been postponed to a later date for further investigations.
