‘Various challenges’ led to lack of refuse removal

For two consecutive weeks, Ekurhuleni Metro contractors have not been removing the refuse from wheelie bins in Main Street, Witfield, Boksburg.

According to the complainant, a resident at Greenhaven flats, this lack of refuse removal only occurred on the one side of the street going in the direction of Yaldwyn Road.

The complainant said there are 16 bins at Greenhaven which have not been emptied for two weeks.

“This is a health risk,” he said.

“I did report it to the call centre, but the person on the other side of the phone just laughed at me.”

According to the Ekurhuleni Metro spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, due to various challenges regarding vehicle availability which included unforeseen breakdowns, vehicle down-time due to accidents and vehicles that had to go for their annual renewal of the certificate of fitness, the round collection services could not be rendered according to the published refuse removal calendar.

“Refuse removal services were rendered to all areas, however, it was rendered a day or in the worst case scenario, two days after the scheduled day. Note that this did not only affect the complainant, but all areas in Boksburg north of the N17 highway,” said Gadebe.

“The challenges were resolved and as from Friday, September 16, refuse removal services normalised.”

Members of the public are welcome to call the Boksburg depot directly regarding operational issues at telephone numbers: 011 999 5446/5310/5423/5070/6227.

“The cleanliness of Ekurhuleni Metro is not the sole responsibility of the municipality, but each and every resident and business has a civic responsibility toward the cleanliness of the environment we live in.

“All residents and businesses are called upon not to litter, not to dump refuse illegally and to place out refuse only on the day of refuse removal,” added Gadebe.
