
The crime stats report showed that some of the crimes most feared by communities, including murder, sexual offences and robbery, have increased in the area.
The stats revealed an increase in most contact crimes, with the exception of common assault.
Contact crimes have gone up by 13.2 per cent during the last financial year.
Murder is up by 75 per cent and it is the third consecutive year that murder has increased.
There were 42 people killed in the precinct during the 2015/16 financial year, compared to the 24 killed the previous financial year.
Meanwhile attempted murder is up by 50 per cent, aggravated robbery up by 12.1 per cent and assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm is up by 24.1 per cent, while common assault dropped by 7.5 per cent.
Sexual offences are still an area of concern. The total sexual offences have increased by 29.3 per cent, and common robbery increased by 22.8 per cent.
Property related crimes increased by 12.2 per cent.
Most alarming is the property crimes such as burglary at residential premises which increased by 18.9 per cent.
A total of 547 cases were reported during the 2015/16 financial year compared to the 460 reported during the 2014/15 financial year.
The crime stats showed that there was a slight decrease in theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle.
A drop of 4 per cent was reported, showing a decline from 350 last year to the current figure of 336.
Carjacking decreased by 11.9 per cent, theft from motor vehicle increased by 18.6 per cent, while truck hijacking decreased by 80 per cent from last year.
Another major concern was the increase in robbery at residential and non-residential premises showing increases of 19.4 per cent and 23.6 per cent, respectively.
Cash-in-transit robberies and bank robberies have remained the same (no cases were reported for the past couple of years).
Crime detected as a result of police action like drug-related crime, sexual offences as a result of police action, illegal possession of fire arm and ammunition among others dropped by 23.1 per cent.
The stats, however, show that progress has been made in removing illegal firearms from the streets. Twenty-six firearms were seized compared to the 21 seized the previous financial year.
The total of drug-related crime cases dropped 35.9 per cent, while sexual offences as a result of police action decreased by 57.1 per cent.-@FanieFLK
