Crimes against people on a rise in Boksburg North

Recent crime statistics released by the SAPS has shown an increase of 40 reported cases of crimes against people in the past year, in Boksburg North.

Crimes against people have increased from 823 to 863 reported incidents in 2015/16.

Murder has gone up with five reported cases to 11, from the previous period’s six; however, attempted murder has declined by four incidents, to a total of nine in the current period.

The number of sexual offences filed has increased by 40, to 267 in the current period.

This year has seen a spike of 40 additional common assault incidents being reported.

In addition, assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm has climbed by 22 more cases, to 102.

There has been a decrease of 29 recorded cases of aggravated robbery.

This crime has seen a climb compared to the previous two years, but came down to a still concerning 377 reports being filed in 2015/16.

Common robbery has remained the same over the last year, with 57 cases recorded.

Good news is that burglaries at residential premises have dropped by 54 reported cases, with 453 incidents in 2015/16, compared to 507 last year.

Even though this statistic is still sky high, there has been a decrease in this crime the past two years.

The number of reported robberies at residential premises has also reduced, from 75 to 55.

However, businesses may have to tighten up on security, as there has been an increase of 123 incidents of commercial crime, taking the tally to 535 this year.

Another potentially concerning crime has declined this year. A total of 515 incidents of theft out of or from motor vehicles have been recorded, compared to last year’s 558 cases.

Thefts of motor vehicles and motorcycles have spiked, with five more reports filed this year, making this year’s total 521.

In 2015/16, the number of carjacking incidents reported has decreased by 16, from 63 to 47.

The statistics have shown a surprising decrease of 111 arrests for drug-related crimes in the past year in Boksburg North, which is known as the drug-hub of the town.

Statistics reflect that police action led to a total of 705 drug-related arrests in 2015/16, compared to 816 the previous year.

However, this number is still a matter of concern.

The crime statistics of nine years ago (2006/07) reflect a total of only 61 arrests for drug-related crimes.

The reported figures remained rather constant for three years thereafter – 97 (2007/08), 86 (2008/09) and 95 (2009/10).

The sudden drastic increase in drug-related crimes emerged in 2010/11, with 225 arrests.
