Big words from the mayor, but will they bear fruit?

Howard Skeens, from Sunward Park, writes:

The new ANC mayor is big on words. Like the ridiculous use of the word ”challenge”, while the buzz word in ANC circles is “collective”.

In Ekurhuleni’s case the collective just happens to be the same old bunch of no hopers who’ve “served” us for the past five years and longer. What exactly did they achieve?

So what has the mayor lined up as priorities? Here’s part of the list – all presumably under the heading capex expenditure:

Electrification of all informal settlements, incorporating solar power and other alternative power methods (what’s that?); construction of 100 000 housing units; provision of 59 000 serviced stands with tarred roads; investing in water infrastructure.

Most of the capital budget will be used to fund this. No problem. However, have the mayor and his “star” team any idea on funding/collecting the resultant monthly charges?

The socialist scheme of robbing Peter to fund Paul doesn’t work. The metro already has approximately R3-billion in basically uncollectable debt.

There’s an opportunity here: by reducing the number of floating around cadres the hugely inflated monthly payroll will diminish, so will the fraud and corruption.

Add to this that employing highly skilled people to do the specialist jobs means no more spending millions on consultants.

Shooting from the hip will come back to haunt you Mr Mayor. I, for one, will be waiting, wide-eyed, for the establishment of a power station in Ekurhuleni, backed by alternative and renewable energies!

Try not to apply more of the socialist policies that your predecessors followed, resulting in the deindustrialisation of Ekurhuleni.

Oh yes, I’m keeping a copy of your grandiose plans as a reminder of what you and the team plan to do over the next five years!
