The man allegedly fabricated a story about a hijacking on Tuesday, August 23.
He went to the police station and told the police that the company car he was driving had been hijacked in Boksburg.
The man’s account of how his company car was hijacked smelt a bit fishy to the detectives.
Upon investigation the police discovered that the man drove the car to the entrance of Boksburg City Stadium, where he parked it, before he went to open a false case of hijacking.
The man allegedly admitted faking the hijacking when he was questioned by the police.
He reportedly told the police that he lied because he faced financial problems.
The man was arrested and charged with perjury, and was due to appear in court on Wednesday, August 24.
The police declined to immediately reveal the man’s ulterior motive for faking the hijacking, saying the disclosure could jeopardise ongoing investigations.
In the light of this case and other recent similar cases, the Boksburg police are warning the public against opening fake cases for any purposes.
They reminded the public that reporting a false case to the police is a criminal offence, and will lead to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
It is also a waste of police resources and manpower. -@FanieFLK
