Proceeding to elect new Ekurhuleni mayor underway

Newly elected Ekurhuleni councillors have just been sworn in at the Council Chambers in Germiston and the IEC members are currently setting up a voting station where the mayor and speaker will be voted in.

So far, two people have been nominated for the position of speaker.

The ANC has put forward long time council speaker Patricia Khumalo’s name while the DA has nominated Shadow Shabangu.

So far proceedings have been going on smoothly, with no interruptions reported.

Different political party members have also gathered outside council chambers to witness to proceedings first hand.

No political party won an outright majority in Ekurhuleni.

The ANC received 109 seats out of the 224. The DA won 77 seats and the EFF 25.
