This is according to Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson.
Ngema served the metro since 2009. He is currently assisting the metro during this transition period until his last day on August 31.
“After serving a full-term (2011-2016) and an additional two years, Ngema is set to pursue other professional interests,” said Gadebe.
“The City Manager felt that it was time to move on after spending seven years in a robust environment of municipal governance.
Ekurhuleni’s Head of Communications and Brand Management, Rego Mavimbela, said that during this period, he led a team entrusted to turnaround and stabilise the municipality.
“The metro would like to express sincere gratitude to Ngema’s dedicated service to the City and its people, and wishes him well in his future endeavours.
“Ngema will be remembered for his leadership that saw, among other things, Ekurhuleni turning its tide on wasteful expenditure since 2011.
“The metro reduced wasteful expenditure from R20.8 million in the 2013/14 financial year to R1.8 million in the last financial year.
“Ekurhuleni further reduced its irregular spending from R235 million to R68 million in the last financial year, dropping it by a hefty amount, of R187 million.
“The metro received clean audits for two consecutive years between 2013 and 2015 under Ngema’s leadership.
“Ekurhuleni is also in good place to invest after its recent four-notch upgrade by Moody’s Investors Services.
“This places the metro at Aaa national scale rating, the highest possible rating, from the previous A1. It also received a global scale rating of Baa2.”
