Metro takes steps to protect theft of manhole covers
The Ekurhuleni municipality has responded to reports of stolen manhole covers in Groeneweide.
Groeneweide resident, Andre van Staden recently said that he had witnessed an unknown man in a white bakkie loading a manhole cover into his vehicle at corner of Robben and Tunny streets in Groeneweide.
According to Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the metro, the metro has put measures in place to solve the problem of vandalism and theft by replacing old galvanised manhole covers with new concrete polymer covers.
“Some manhole covers are not missing due to theft but because the lids are broken and fall into the manhole as community members drive over them.
“The debris and fragments of the manhole covers are recovered from the manholes as proof of vandalism and to prevent any blockages,” he said.
The City of Ekurhuleni is consistently replacing the missing manhole covers.
Residents are encouraged to report any acts of vandalism and theft and missing manhole covers to the municipal call centre on 086 054 300.
