Amphitheatre so to say completed, vandals cash in
While information is still sketchy, the newly-constructed amphitheatre at the Boksburg Lake appears to be completed.
Construction work on the R2,1-million facility began in September, last year, and was scheduled to be completed this year, in March.
It is, however, unclear as to whether the facility is ready for the local creative arts community to take to the stage.
The massive construction work to revitalise the recreation area at the lake was carried out by Aveng-Grinaker and Earthforcehead, as well as their sub-contractors.
The Advertiser has, on numerous occasions, visited the site and discovered that the contractors have left. This publication is still awaiting municipal response on the project.
The Advertiser has also recently noticed that, while on the one hand the metro is giving the Boksburg Lake a major facelift, vandals are, on the other hand, helping themselves to the palisade fence in broad daylight.
The Advertiser also discovered that there are two high-mast poles which were left lying on the ground, making them very vulnerable to scrap metal scavengers.
As previously reported, according to metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe, the facilities will be made available to the public to use free of charge, once the project is completed.
However, a booking fee will be charged.
Gadebe previously told the Advertiser that another R10-m is earmarked in the 2016/17 and 2017/18 financial year budget, for further development on the south bank.
“This will include more play areas, picnic areas and upgrading of the old lapa, as well as hard and soft landscaping,” said Gadebe.
“The tender for the appointment of a consultant to conduct specialist studies of the Boksburg Lake was advertised and closed on December 4.

“The scope of work includes determining the current pollution status of the lake, investigation of the best rehabilitation option, public participation and obtaining the necessary environmental authorisation.
“This phase of the project is scheduled to take 18 to 24 months.
“The actual rehabilitation work will resume once the costs have been established and resources secured.”- @FanieFLK
