Church tackles 14 projects for Mandela Day

In honour of Mandela Day, Living Waters Church served the community by hosting its annual Serving Initiative on Saturday, July 16.

This is a Serving Humanity In Need Everywhere (Shine) initiative in conjunction with Living Waters Church.

This year, about 245 volunteers took on 14 projects to celebrate the Mandela legacy.

Volunteers could choose between the following projects:

* Beanie, glove, hat and non-perishable food drive: A team packed much needed items into bags and delivered them to car guards around Boksburg.

* Hospice visit: A team visited a Hospice Centre and spent time with the patients and blessed the staff.

* Police station: Two teams painted areas that needed maintenance and washed police vehicles at the Boksburg police station.

* Visiting children’s homes: Teams spent time and played with the children.

* Tambo Memorial Hospital visit: Two teams visited the adult and children’s wards.

* Retirement homes: A team visited two retirement homes and spent a couple of hours chatting and praying with the elderly.

* Boksburg library: A team repaired books at the library.

* Cleaning-up and rubbish: Volunteers picked up rubbish in the Boksburg area.

* Donating blood: SANBS collected blood from volunteers throughout the day.

Other places that were visited included Jubilee Place of Safety and Detention, Keep Me Safe House, and Cosmos Home for the Aged.

There also was a group of youngsters making sandwiches for the homeless.

“There’s a lot of negativity in the world and this type of event brings the community together,” said Shine chairperson, Michael Zietsman.
