Victim fights back against robbers, shoots one

A gang of knife- and screwdriver-wielding robbers thought that they had an easy score until their intended victim turned out to be better armed.

The gang met its match when one of their members was shot by their intended victim, on Tuesday afternoon.

The complainant told the police that he was walking along Hospital Road, near Tambo Memorial Hospital, when he was confronted by three men, described as coloured males, who threatened him with a knife and a screwdriver and demanded money and his cellphone.

But the seemingly routine criminal activity by the trio went awry, as their target unexpectedly pulled out a firearm, shocking them.

The persistent assailants, however, repeatedly tried to stab the armed victim, before he subsequently fired a shot at them.

The bullet hit one of the attackers in the leg.

The other two assailants were then forced to retreat and fled the scene with the victim in pursuit.

The pair disappeared into the nearby bushes and the victim returned to the scene and called the police, who rushed the injured attacker to Tambo Memorial Hospital, where he was being kept under police guard.

He faces a charge of attempted robbery. His accomplices are still at large.

The attackers’ weapons were found on the scene.

* Elsewhere, four balaclava-clad armed robbers forced their way into a woman’s shack in Angelo informal settlement and helped themselves to her belongings.

The victim told the police that on Tuesday night she was awoken by the intruders, described as black males, who entered the shack and robbed her of cash, an amplifier, shoes and personal documents.

A case of house robbery was registered and investigation continues. -@FanieFLK
