67 minutes for a good cause

Every year, on July 18, the world celebrates Mandela Day, which is a global movement to honour his life’s work and for individuals to act and change the world for the better.

The former President once said: “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead”.

Keeping the spirit of Nelson Mandela alive across Boksburg, generous residents gave back to their communities by offering their time and money to disadvantaged centres that care for children and the community at large.

Kimberly Clark, a company based in Bedfordview, saw it fit to give back to the community by donating items to the New Beginnings Care Centre.

Members of Kimberly Clark donated disposable nappies, baby soft tissues and Kotex to underprivileged people who live at the centre.

Meanwhile, Scaffold Services and Concraft Scaffolding, in conjunction with ANC branch members in Ward 43, who were dressed in yellow Mandela T-shirts, spent their 67 minutes painting the Bride of Christ Church, in Windmill Park.

Scaffold Services and Con Craft Scaffolding donated the paint, food and printed Mandela Day T-shirts for everyone who came out to support the project.

Majozi Mkhonto said they identified Windmill Park as a vulnerable area that needed to be assisted, and there was no better way to do that than to give one of the churches in Windmill Park a facelift.

“We grew up in church and we were taught how to treat and love our neighbours. We are contributing to a church because we know that is where people in the community find help,” Mkhonto said.

* A sewing group of women known as Bafazi Siyanqoba, in partnership with Christelike Maatskaplike Raad (CMR) social workers, gave their helping hand to the Holomisa Section D children’s playgroup centre, in Windmill Park.

They spent their 67 minutes cleaning the premises and feeding the children. They also donated winter hats and scarves knitted by the Bafazi Siyanqoba project.

The CMR social workers donated blankets for the children and also prepared soup.

* CTU Training Solutions Boksburg hosted a toy drive at Sanelich Pre-school, in Trichardts Road, on Mandela Day.

CTU staff and SRC members played soccer and rugby with the children at the centre.

Sunward Park Gemeenskap Kerk sponsored some goodies for the children at the pre-school.
