Road of death: Metro finally gives ear to residents’ plea

The metro has finally decided to take heed of residents’ call to improve road safety measures on the stretch of Main Reef Road where four women were recently killed and two others badly injured.

The municipality has confirmed that necessary measures would be taken to ensure that motorists adhere to the rules of the roads in order to prevent the never-ending series of disasters in the area.

According to Ekurhuleni spokesman Themba Radebe, an inspection was carried out along Wit Deep and Main Reef roads on Monday, June 27.

“Based on the findings from the investigations, the Ekurhuleni Metro will install the necessary pedestrian warning signs along Wit Deep and Main Reef Roads, and the wording “SLOW” will also be painted on the road to caution motorists.

“The work is expected to be completed by Friday, July 15,” said Gadebe.

The metro will also provide road safety training for residents of Angelo Hotel, Chris Hani, Kakana and Jerusalem informal settlements.

The metro has been criticised for failing to heed advice about lack of safe pedestrian crossings, traffic calming signs and road markings in the areas in question.

The investigation carried out by the municipality has revealed that the pedestrian crossings at the traffic signals at the Wit Deep/ Main Reef, Main/Main Reef and Field/ Main Reef have to be repainted.

Other findings were as follows:
