Erryn Black: "Unemployment is a major issue that should be dealt with fairly. It is unfair towards the youth and I blame the government as I think our President is not the right candidate to lead this country. If they can appoint a new leader things will change in South Africa. I am not confident that I will find a job, due to the unemployment rate."
Following the recent, alarming unemployment rate siting at 26.7 per cent, representing a 2.2 percentage point increase compared to the last quarter of 2015, the question of if there is a future for the youth of today, in terms of finding work, remains.
Thipe Sefoka: “People have the energy to complain about jobs, but no energy to find jobs. There is a mentality that there’s no work, so people just fall into this negative mindset. The youth has potential, it’s just that they are lazy to do something constructive with their minds. I will get a job, because I am I positive and a go-getter.”
Kamogelo Tlape: “People don’t have a hunger to actually go out there and look for jobs. They are dependent on getting everything. The government is not responsible for unemployment, but we, as the people, are the ones who are responsible for our own unemployment. I will get a job because I am an enthusiastic student and will do anything to get my success.”
Keamohetswe Tlaele: “Yes, unemployment has increased, but the government is not the one to be blamed because some people don’t want to take steps to create jobs. They are depending on the government to make things happen for them. I will definitely get a job, because I am determined.”
Hlengiwe Mkhonza: “Unemployment is increasing day by day; we as the youth are all affected by it. I hope I will get a job because I will venture into entrepreneurship. The government has failed the people because it is the one who is supposed to provide jobs.”
Fukile Mnqibisa: “People should find means to empower themselves and not depend on the government. The youth should create jobs for themselves in order for unemployment to decrease. But, for now, things will stay the same because everyone is sitting and waiting for someone to provide jobs for them. I believe I will get a job because I study hard to get good grades in order to become a chartered accountant.”
Banele Ngwenya: “I think when I’m done with school I will struggle to get a job because of the unemployment rate in our country. I am not optimistic that I will find a job after school, but I am going to be an entrepreneur in order to have some source of income.”
Monique Shields: “Unemployment raises serious issues as it causes young people to doubt their own future. You have to wonder if studying will be worth it. I am hoping I will get a job, but if I don’t I will create my own job”.
Nkhensani Mthombeni: “I think there are many job opportunities out there, but the problem is the people in power in the workplaces. They are the ones who are selfish by hiring relatives and family members, then the rest of the people remain jobless. This results in people who are not qualified getting jobs because they are connected to someone in that company. I will get a job because the career path I want to take is IT.”
Kgomotso Molefe: “Unemployment is worrying. The best way to survive is for people to be their own boss and create job opportunities for themselves. I will get a job, not because of the connections I have, but because I will do my own thing in order to generate money.”
