Baby airlifted to hospital is ‘doing well’

The seven-month-old baby who was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition after a taxi overturned on the N17 highway is doing well.

The baby sustained critical injuries, while 10 other people were also injured in the accident, which occurred on April 30, just before 9am.

EMER-G-MED said the infant required immediate Advanced Life Support interventions.

The baby was stabilised, while the Netcare911 Aeromedical helicopter was activated to airlift it to a specialist paediatric trauma centre, in Johannesburg.

Responding to questions on the baby’s condition, on its Facebook page on May 1, Emer-G-Med said: “Thankfully, the baby was doing well the last time our crews followed up. Thankfully, in a much more stable condition. All of us at EMER-G-MED are wishing for a fast and full recovery.”

Netcare 911 spokesperson Athlenda Mathe reported on April 30 that a total of 10 people sustained moderate injuries.

“All 10 were stabilised on scene before they were transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further medical care,” she said.

Mathe said the Netcare2 helicopter was dispatched to the scene to airlift the seven-month-old baby to a Johannesburg hospital for further medical care.

The highway was closed completely to allow the helicopter to land and take off safely.

The exact events preceding the crash are still under investigation by local authorities.
