Rotaract gets down and dirty during birthday celebrations at Urban Ruins

Boksburg Lake Rotaract recently celebrated Rotaract International's 48th birthday with a project that took them back to their roots.

Rotaract was founded in the United States of America and its very first project was planting trees.

In the spirit of how Roteract sprouted to life, a group of local enthusiastic adults aged 18 to 35 spent their morning at Urban Ruins, in Plantation, planting trees.

Urban Ruins is an NPO that seeks to uplift children in Boksburg by providing a safe place to play and learn.

With the support of the Boksburg Lake Rotary Club and Boksburg Lake Rotary Anns, they started the day with an interactive discussion on the importance and conservation of trees.

The children at Urban Ruins were divided into groups were they decorated a drawing of a tree with their hand prints as a memoir of the day.

Everyone participated in the planting of fruit trees after the children were given hot dogs and cupcakes.

“In addition to celebrating Rotaract’s birthday, we also wanted to teach the children and teenagers about the necessity of trees and creating awareness about trees in our environment,” said Rotaract president Jessica Jones.

“The plum, peach and lemon trees that we planted will be cared for by Urban Ruins as part of their gardening program”.

Boksburg Lake Rotaract looks forward to continuing their blossoming partnership with Urban Ruins and the inspirational children and teenagers who attend the facility.
