IEC REGISTRATION: It is clear that many believe to vote still counts

IEC called, the community heard the plea and they responded.

Across the country, more than three million people flocked to the polling stations over the weekend of March 5 and 6, to either register as a new voter (almost 700 000 countrywide) or to re-register for the upcoming municipal elections.

In Gauteng, 156 331 new voters registered.

In Boksburg, young and old holding their green IDs also flocked to the numerous voting stations scattered across the city.

Elize Burchell, an 80-year-old resident of Sunward Park, ensured her name is on the voters’ roll.

Burchell said she is happy that she will be casting her vote for change.

“I started voting when I was 18 and it feels great every time, because the choice begins with me to make an informed decision on which party I think will govern us in a right manner,” she added.

According to her, it is essential to vote in order to ”see change in our country, because we really need change”.

Former General Secretary of NUM, Frans Baleni, who was also in Sunward Park to check if his name is on the roll, said that everyone should use this opportunity to vote.

“I encourage everyone to continue to vote so we can live in a better country,” he commented.

Ward 43’s Clr Bruce Reid encouraged young people to realise the importance of their votes.
