Police bring order to volatile protests in Ramaphosa

Residents of the Tokyo informal settlement, in Ramaphosa, took their grievances to the streets by blockading busy roads in protest against the lack of service delivery in the area.

The group of residents made their anger known during the wee hours of Tuesday, March 1. They blocked Commissioner and Elsburg streets with bricks, burning tyres and other objects.

Drivers who were caught up in the protest at about 2am had to make quick U-turns to avoid being attacked.

The blockade also forced peak-hour traffic to use alternative routes.

Residents told the Advertiser that they were promised RDP houses with electricity and running water years ago, but nothing has happened.

Others said they are tired of using bucket toilets, living in darkness and relying on paraffin.

Demonstrators upended the unfashionable communal bucket toilets in the informal settlement.

The police managed to calm the situation and drove away the protesters.

By 7am, both the SAPS and EMPD had restored order. EMPD officers monitored the area throughout Tuesday to ensure peace, while cleaning up the rubble.

The Advertiser understands that some of the protesters will intensify their action if the mayor fails to meet with them. -@FanieFLK
