Sars detector dog scores two busts worth R600 000

The well-trained Sars Custom Control detector dog found narcotics worth over R500 000 in two separate routine checks, in two separate incidents, at OR Tambo International Airport on Monday, February 1.

In both instances, the dog indicated that something was amiss when he sat down next to the parcels, which were then selected for inspection at two courier outlets.

Sars reported on its website that, in the first incident, the dog intercepted a consignment headed for Budapest, declared as Citronella Scented Wax Melts.

Upon inspection this turned out to be 77 blocks of compressed cannabis, weighing 77kg and valued at R107 800.

The dagga was concealed under pieces of soap.

In a follow up incident, dog reacted positively to a box filled with clothing, destined for Amsterdam.

Upon closer inspection small packets containing power were found hidden in the lining of the box. This turned out to be heroin, valued at R484 344.

Both consignments were handed over to the South African Police Service for investigation.
