Scotland’s famous Bard celebrated in Boksburg

The Eastern Johannesburg Caledonian Society held its annual Burns Supper at Little Nero’s Restaurant, on January 23.

The evening was a tribute to the life of Robert Burns, Scotland’s famous Bard, and the Scottish culture.

Throughout the world, Scots and those of Scottish descent pay tribute to Burns in the traditional way, and so it was done in Boksburg, too.

The dignitaries were piped in by piper Daniel Limpitlaw, followed by the piping in of Scotland’s National dish, the Haggis, held on high and presented for the Address to a Haggis, by Norma Craven.

After the address The Star of Robbie Burns was sung.

The festivities also included The Skirl of the Pipes and the Swing of the Kilt; Highland Dancing Displays by the Reval Saayman Studio; a toast to South Africa (by Tommy Soutar) and a toast to Scotland (by Cheryl MacDonald); the Immortal Memory to be reminded of Burns’ amazing works (by Duncan MacDonald); as well as a toast to the Lassies (by Patrick Craven) and the reply to this toast (by Jane Dyer).

The event was concluded with the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
