Metro launches operation Bumper-to-Bumper to tackle road safety
The Ekurhuleni Metro’s Festive Season campaign, with the theme Operation Bumper-to-Bumper: Escalated, targeting toad safety, was launched on December 3.
Ekurhuleni Chief of Police Bafana Mahlabe, together with Mayor Mondli Gungubele, attended the launch.
The law enforcement campaign is intended to intensify police visibility, road safety, crime prevention, traffic and by-law enforcement.
Mahlabe indicated that police visibility will be intensified as many people fall victim to crime during this season.
“To ensure that the police presence is felt, we will be deploying our Peace Corps, who will patrol shopping malls.
“There will also be more EMPD officers guarding townships, suburbs and various CBDs,” said Mahlabe.
After the official launch, the mayor took to the streets with a message of safety and interacted with motorists at a blitz operation on the M2 highway, in Germiston.
Road blocks, stop and search, drug peddling, drunken driving, illegal mining, armed robberies, hijackings and land invasion are among the areas on which the operation will focus, to ensure compliance with the law.
While the EMPD focuses on crime and traffic duties, the Ekurhuleni Emergency Services will be on high alert and will set up mini-roadside stations on all high-accident routes and major freeways, including the N3, N17, N12 and the Albertina Sisuilu Corridor.
