Crime stats: Rest easier in Boksburg North this festive season

Residents of Boksburg North can rest easy at night leading up to the Christmas period.

Recent crime statistics released by the SAPS and compiled by the Institute for Security Studies, has shown a decrease of 137 reported cases in residential burglaries from 2014 to 2015.

Statistics reflect that a total of 507 residential burglary incidents have been reported in 2014/15, compared to 644 cases the previous year.

However, businesses may have to tighten up on security, as there has been an increase of 68 incidents of business burglaries.

Although the number of aggravated robberies has been stable over the last five years, this year has seen a spike of 75 additional incidents being reported.

Residents should, therefore, still remain vigilant, as there may be an increase in crime in general over the Christmas period.

A concerning statistic is the substantial increase in drug-related crimes.

In 2013/14, 710 cases of drug-related crimes were recorded while, so far in 2014/15, 816 cases have been reported.

In general, other violent crimes have neither increased nor decreased drastically over the last year.

Good news is that there has been no spike over the past five years in crimes relating to vehicles, which includes carjackings (63 for 2014/2105) and theft of vehicles (516, down from 811 in 2009/2010).

Sexual cases have been almost halved over the course of five years, with 63 filed reports in 2009/10 and 34 being filed in 2014/15.

Parents, however, need not worry too much over their children’s safety, as crimes such as murder, attempted murder, public violence, kidnapping, neglect and ill treatment of children have remained few and far between.
