Highway rock-throwing ‘lunatics’ back in action

It appears that the 'lunatics' who throw rocks at passing vehicles are resurfacing.

Last night, a Boksburg WhatsApp crime group warned that bricks were being thrown at passing cars, at the intersection of Kraft and Barbara Roads.

The group reported that the bricks were being thrown again at the same spot this morning (September 22).

No injuries have been reported so far but the last time it happened, a number of people landed in hospital with serious injuries.

Parkrand resident Darrell Badenhorst was travelling on the N12 from Johannesburg to the East on Thursday afternoon (April 30) when a passenger in his car was hit with a brick.

The brick went through his car’s passenger window and hit the passenger, Marionette Schwab (42), on the side of the head.

She ended up in coma in hospital.

Another victim was an 8-year-old boy named Caden Slabbert from Benoni, who also spent time in ICU fighting for his life.

On September 21, police in Alberton on the East Rand cautioned motorists of rock-throwing incidents on highways after the Mondeor Sector 2 patroller’s vehicle was hit with a rock .

The incident happened near Voortrekker Bridge in Alberton, at about 7.45pm on September 11, when the patroller’s front windscreen was hit by a rock, which caused major damage, Alberton Record reported.

Mondeor Sector 2 CPF’s, Michelle Pelser, sent out an urgent alert to residents warning them to be vigilant when driving on the highway, which has become infamous for rock throwers targeting motorists.

The Advertiser is still waiting for comment from the EMPD.
