Olympic Day encourages people to become more active

The Ekurhuleni Metro hosted a successful Olympics Day at the the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre on August 31.

South Africa’s top athletes took time off their busy schedules to enjoy the day’s festivities with amateur athletes from across Ekurhuleni and to partake in a 5km fun walk, 7.9km run and aerobic sessions.

The day was held in partnership with the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc).

The top athletes are heading to the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa and the All Africa Games in Brazzaville, Congo.

According to Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson, Olympics Day is the only annual worldwide event of the Olympic movement and serves as an ideal platform to encourage people to become more active while highlighting the benefits of being physically active.

Banyana Banyana stars that represented South Africa at the 2012 London Olympics, Refiloe Jane, Janine van Wyk and Amanda Dlamini, also joined in the day’s activities.

Young people were taught about the importance of the Olympian life philosophy that combines the values of a balanced mind, will and body. The youngsters soon learned that the Olympics is not just about competing for medals but also tackles the issues of racism and fairness, as well as working with communities.
