Miss Earth SA semi-finalist wants to engineer change

Twenty-four-year-old Miss Earth SA 2015 regional semi-finalist Mmina Ndala is a funny, witty, ambitious and diligent woman, striving to make a difference in her community.

Ndala, from Boksburg, said she joined the Miss Earth SA organisation because she wants to be an agent of change.

“As a mechanical engineering student, I want to modify manufacturing processes in order for less energy to be used for production,” she said.

“I want to help design manufacturing plants that are ergonomic and energy conserving; I want to assist in reducing emissions and also encourage scrap recycling.

“The Miss Earth platform will give me the tools and exposure that can assist me in fulfilling my dreams.”

Ndala matriculated in 2008, from Dawnview High School, and is working at Gyproc Saint-Gobain as an intern student mechanical engineer, while completing her qualification part-time at Unisa.

Her hobbies include reading inspirational books, which include 7 habits of highly effective people by Stephen R Covey.

Her favourite author is John C Maxwell.

Another of her hobbies is acting. The biggest production she has tackled is The Passion of Christ and the next production, Glory and Fire, will be running in June.

“Being a part of the pageant has taught me more about the environment and now I am more cautious about what I eat, what I buy, how I travel and how I use water and electricity,” Ndala said.

“In the process, not only have I become more conservative in my lifestyle, but I have also managed to save money!”

As a regional semi-finalist, she has conducted a waste management project at Mampudi Primary School, where 10 trees were planted with the Grade Six students.

She was also involved in the Miss Earth SA Bloubos Spruit clean-up.

According to Ndala, the Miss Earth SA experience, so far, has been unbelievable and humbling.

She is currently seeking sponsorship for the rest of the community projects she is to carry out as a semi-finalist.

If Ndala takes the Miss Earth SA 2015 crown, she wishes to empower disadvantaged communities with sustainable development projects.

“I see myself building bridges where needed, building water supply systems that will bring water closer to communities and encouraging the growth of various plants, to be more environmentally friendly,” she explained .

“I see South Africa and South Africans living a more environmentally friendly life and living in environmentally friendly houses; I see South Africa as a nation that does not have energy resource problems like water and electricity, because people will be more efficient in conserving these resources.”

The finalists will be announced on July 1 and the gala will be held in September. – @IschkeBoksburg
