Woman sentenced to six years for stealing R1.4-m

The following cases were heard in the Boksburg Magistrat's Court:

* Owen Illes (36), of Van Dyk Park, was found guilty of assaulting 65-year-old AH Visser, on May 25.

Illes had pleaded not guilty on May 12, but the court found him guilty and sentenced him to a fine of R3 000 or six months in prison, of which R1 500 or three months was suspended.

Illes, who has no previous convictions, assaulted Visser by hitting him with a fist and twisting his arm, on January 12, along Kingfisher Road.

Magistrate Emmanuel Magamapa presided and prosecutor Angeline Mooiman represented the state.

* Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi (31), of Vosloorus, was convicted of theft on May 26.

Mkhwanazi stole a 5lt wine container worth R114.99 from Shoprite, on May 1.

He pleaded guilty, was found guilty, and sentenced to a fine of R2 000 or six months in jail, which was wholly suspended for five years.

He has no previous convictions.

Magistrate Jurg Vivier presided and prosecutor Shadrack Futshana represented the state.

* Precious Voyi (20), of Daveyton, was convicted of theft on May 25.

On March 14, Voyi stole a pie valued at R12. She had no previous conviction.

She pleaded guilty, was found guilty and was sentenced to a fine of R3 000 or six months, in jail wholly suspended.

Magistrate Molefe Ratlau presided and prosecutor Palesa Setshedi represented the state.

* Miseni Hlela (22), of Vosloorus, was sentenced to prison for possession of an illegal firearm.

Hlela was found in possession of a Norinco semi-automatic pistol and three cartridges on June 16, last year.

He has no previous conviction, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years in prison.

Magistrate Sijren Harichand presided and prosecutor Nkosazana Tyeku represented the state.

* Jacqueline Claire Browne (49), of Atlasville, was sentenced to six years in prison for 110 charges of fraud, on May 25.

The accused was employed as a bookkeeper at Avatar Airfreight, when she occasionally and unlawfully, electronically transferred company funds into her own bank account.

She pleaded guilty on February 2, to stealing a total of R1 400 131.65 between September 2010 and July 2013.

She has no previous convictions.

Magistrate Abel Shilubane presided and prosecutor Maria Olivier represented the state.
