World Book Day encourages people to read
World Book Day was celebrated on Thursday, April 23 at the Boksburg Civic Centre with the theme "Come read with me."
According to the metro spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, World Book and Copyright Day (also known as International Day of the Book or World Book Day) is a yearly event celebrated on April 23, initiated by Unesco to promote reading, publishing and copyright.
“The connection between April 23 and books was first made in 1923 by booksellers in Catalonia, Spain as a way to honour the author Miguel de Cervantes who died on that day.
“This became a part of the celebration of the Saint George’s Day (also April 23).”
Gauteng Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC, Molebatsi Bopape, in conjunction with The Centre for the Book (an outreach unit for the National Library of South Africa) hosted the World Book Day celebration in Boksburg. – @NalediBoksburg
