SPCA investigates: Parkdene guinea fowls in apparent danger

According to Boksburg resident Bernard Cox, there is an onslaught on the Guinea fowl that nest in the veld below Parkdene, alongside Rondebult Road and Bigwood Avenue.

“The modus operandi is that, over weekends, a platoon of men with dogs arrives to catch and kill the fowls,” said Cox.

“The carcases are then collected and the mob disperses with their plunder, only to return via taxi the next day, to steal the eggs.”

He added that the hens which are found sitting on the eggs, are struck with sticks, to drive them from the nests.

“The men then load hundreds of eggs into buckets. Afterwards they wait for the prescribed taxi to fetch them and make their getaway.”

The Boksburg SPCA is aware of this incident.

“Our inspector visited the area over the Easter weekend, but did not see anything,” said Boksburg SPCA manager Wilma Steynbergh.

“We will be on the lookout over weekends.”

Anyone who witnesses this type of incident occurring again, is urged to contact the SPCA on the emergency number, 083 763 6311. – @IschkeBoskburg
