Socio-economic ills fueled by numerous challanges

The City of Ekurhuleni is experiencing high levels of unemployment, poverty and inequality.

The triple developmental challenges are the root-cause of most of the socio-economic ills that continue to ravage communities.

This is according to Ekurhuleni mayor Mondli Gungubele, who addressed the State of the City Address business breakfast, on Friday, March 27.

The mayor highlighted the importance of the aerotropolis development programme and the investment facilitation.

“In addition to the identification of over 107 investment projects across Ekurhuleni, through a process of strategic prioritisation, we have identified 21 catalytic and eight strategic projects for implementation and investment over the next five years,” he said.

“In order to realise these investment opportunities, I am happy to announce that, since November, last year, council has approved a 40 per cent rebate facility on bulk contributions for roads, which was a major stumbling block for strategic developments and investments in the city.

“This is but one intervention, as we continue to package a bouquet of incentives to attract more investment.

“Furthermore, the metro has resolved to expedite the process to create a favourable investment climate by unlocking strategic land parcels and responding positively to investors. To date 14 SLPs have been packaged.

“The city is also at an advanced stage of organising the Aerotropolis Investment Conference and Expo, which is aimed at promoting the catalytic aerotropolis projects to domestic and international investors.”

He added that the 30-year aerotropolis master plan will be finalised next month.

Speaking on the issues of job creation battle plan, Gungubele said that the metro has resolved to combat unemployment and to eradicate poverty within the metro, by establishing strategic working relationships with social partners. -@NalediBoksburg
