Pakistani shop robbed of R5 900

Fears of xenophobia have been sparked by the robbery of a foreign-owned shop, in Dawn Park, during the afternoon of Sunday, February 1.

According to Dawn Park SAPS spokesperson Capt Charles Tshabalala, four men robbed the shop of items worth R5 900.

“One of the armed men held a gun against the shop owner’s head, while others stole groceries and airtime vouchers,” said the source.

“The Advertiser has, however, heard other reports regarding the incident. According to a reliable source, more than forty people attacked and robbed the tuck shop.

“The broke the wall of the tuck shop and forcefully entered armed with fire arms like AK47. They took money, cigarettes, groceries and airtime,” said the source.

“The motive behind the incident is believed to be a xenophobic attack, because why would 40 people attack one shop owner?”

Dawn Park ward 43 Clr Bruce Reid said the robbery was not xenophobic in nature,

“This was just pure vandalism. Dawn Park has many tuck shops, so the criminals specifically target them. What they did was greed and theft, nothing more.

“It seems the criminals now want to justify their actions by saying it was an act of xenophobia.” – @NalediBoksburg
