Businessman and bookkeeper found guilty of R1.82-m fraud

The Boksburg Regional Court recently found a Kempton Park businessman and her bookkeeper guilty of defrauding Sars of R1.82-million.

Leon Grobbler, of ZS Bell Helicopter, and a Krugersdorp bookkeeper, Linda Smidt, were arrested by the SAPS commercial crime unit on October 27, 2010.

This happened after Smidt submitted an electronic VAT 201 return on behalf of Grobbler’s company, for the purchase of a helicopter costing R14 820 000.

Sars became suspicious, scrutinized the transaction and obtained an affidavit from the seller, in which he confirmed that the sale had lapsed and that the invoice was cancelled at the end of December 2009.

Grobbler and Smidt will hear their fate on February 27, in the Boksburg Regional Court 2.

Their bail has been extended until their next appearance.

Their bail conditions were set as follows:

* They are not allowed to travel outside Gauteng without first seeking permission from the investigating officer.

* They were ordered to surrender their passports.

* They must report to their nearest police stations three times a week.
