Probe into tender just meanders along

Howard Skeens, Sunward Park writes:

We invariably have to listen to the pitiful excuses of the local government about most anything.

In the Ekurhuleni metro, the current meandering babble is about why nothing concrete has happened pertaining to a R31-million tender probe.

This investigation has been bumbling along since January 2013. Even for slow-moving government this is pathetic. An investigation of this nature should be a priority and dealt with within six months – you have a report from the auditors.

Quoting ANC chief whip: “We have a duty to protect public funds and root out corruption”. So let’s see some rooting – make sure you remove everything that is rotten!

Following on from this quote, how come was Khaya Ngema appointed city manager when he was already under a cloud for the irregular awarding of contracts worth R109-m for fixing roads and pavements?

This is another one of those government ‘shuffles’ whereby a top official is caught out and quickly moved to another high-paying position elsewhere – to carry on as before.

Strange that the city manager is also the one that seems to be tasked in following up on the investigation, on himself. Surely that in itself would be a reason for delaying everything – extending salary and perks for as long as possible.

If the DA didn’t keep on harping about this, where would this investigation be – definitely not ‘under the carpet’. Probably lost forever. And fraud, corruption and blatant theft continuing unabated.
