Awesome lifesize cakes baked for good cause
Paul Vieira, owner and creator of Cake Extreme, in Boksburg, has applied his artistic, 3D design and architectural skills to construct a magnificent, lifesize rhinoceros cake.
He was aided by the amazing Cake Boss, Bartolo ”Buddy” Valastro, who helped him structure the cake.
The baking of the rhinoceros was a request from Fiera Milano Exhibitions Africa, in aid of the Save our Rhinos – Endangered Wildlife Trust.
This mind-blowing cake weighed 450kg and was exhibited at the Good Food and Wine Show, held at the Coca Cola Dome.
After it was exhibited, the cake was cut into 5 000 pieces and sold to customers.
“This cake was not only a magnificent structured design, but also brought attention to the rhinoceros plight,” says Vieira.
All funds collected were donated to the charity organisation.
The cake was in the shape of a rhinoceros’s full body standing on all four legs and was supported and constructed by wood.
The basic structure, made from wood and polystyrene, was layered with sponge cake, butter cream and covered in icing fondant to create the real effect and texture of a rhinoceros.
Vieira used over 170 slabs of vanilla sponge cake.
All the ingredients used to make the sponge cake (180kg of cake flour, 9kg of baking powder, 120kg of sugar, 2 400 eggs, 90 liters of water, and 120 liters of cooking oil) were mixed in an industrial mixing pot.
It took 30 mixes to prepare the batter for the slabs of sponge cake.
The butter cream, made from butter cream and icing fondant, was also prepared at Vieira’s bakery.
Cake Extreme sponsored all the wood structure and labour, while all ingredients were sponsored by Bakels SA.

Not only did Vieira bake the rhinoceros, but also a life-size Peugeot RCZ, with a hefty weight of 1 200kg.
Vieira says this cake was baked to promote the Peugeot RCZ. It was also cut into pieces and sold to customers after being exhibited.
Fees collected were donated to the Meals on Wheels Community Service.
Vieira has previously baked a life-size statue of Nelson Mandela, combined with a Carnival City model replicate.
He dreams of baking a life-size house one day and, by the look of it, this dream is already a possibility.
