Gauteng municipalities lose hundreds of millions – DA

According to MPL Fred Nel, who is the DA shadow MEC of Cooperative Governance, Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements, Gauteng municipalities are wasting millions based on the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) 2012/13 report released.

Nel says the report indicates a slight improvement in audit outcomes for Gauteng; however, with an indication of severe problematic areas of the province.

“In the Ekurhuleni metro, more than R45-million was spent on consultants for financial preparation and reporting; up from R32-m in 2012,” explains Nel.

Nel says in total, irregular and wasteful expenditure amounted to almost R800-m in Tshwane, Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni alone.

“This is R800-m too much. In comparison, the DA-run Midvaal municipality showed no irregular or wasteful expenditure and has received unchanged unqualified audit outcomes over the past six years,” he adds.

“It is a critical platform for government to deliver and improve people’s lives. I will be working to ensure that problematic metros and municipalities in this province properly manage public funds,” says Nel.

“Minimal improvements amongst such excessive irregular expenditure will not bring the change and growth that the people of this province so desperately need.” – @TumeloBoksburg
